This nation has too often spoken of freedom with its lips while denying freedom by its laws, its institutions, and its conduct, building power on the backs of Black people and other people of color and then daring to call that order, justice, and democracy. We must tell the truth without trembling: a government that has so often codified inequality, suppressed the voice of the marginalized, and treated whole communities as expendable cannot cleanse itself with ceremony or patriotic slogans. The great sin of America is not only that it wounded generations through white supremacist systems, but that it still resists the full work of repentance, repair, and transformation. Until this country uproots the evil of systemic racism from the ballot box, the courthouse, the classroom, the economy, and the conscience of the nation itself, it will continue to mistake oppression for peace and silence for unity.
